Sree Narayana College Chempazhanthy
Annual Report 2005- 2006

The academic year 2005- 2006 has been very hectic for Sree Narayana College, Chempazhanthy, with a variety of activities, both academic and extra-curricular. This year the college has performed excellently in extension services for the student community, teachers, as well as the community at large. This report is a brief account of the activities undertaken by the college this year towards the fulfillment of its objectives.

In the beginning of the academic year itself the college published the academic calendar for the year.

Apart from the regular academic activities, the college has accomplished a number of tasks of various kinds covering a wide range of areas of activity. The most remarkable among them is SPECTRUM 2005, a series of 28 seminars and scholastic presentations on the most recent literary, socio-economic, and scientific developments. SPECTRUM 2005 was inaugurated by Sri. B.S. Maoji IAS, Director of Collegiate Education, Govt. of Kerala in a colourful function presided over by the Principal, Prof. V.S. Lee, on 25, October 2005. Dr. V. Jayaprakas, Pro-Vice Chancellor of University of Kerala delivered the Key Note address. The curtain raiser session was led by Dr. S. Subhash Chandran, Reader, Research and Post Graduate Department of English, S.N.College, Kollam. The success of SPECTRUM 2005 has been the participation of eminent scholars and personalities from various disciplines as resource persons, presentations by our teachers, and above all presentations of papers by our students. All the sessions were chaired by the respective Head of the Departmentand inaugurated by our Principal. The concluding session was organized by the Department of Oriental Languages, which assumed the glory of a great literary meeting, in which the chief guest was Shri. Sreekumaran Thampy, one of the greatest contemporary literary and film personalities of Kerala.Dr Kunju Mohamed Metharu, Syndicate member, University of Kerala offered felicitation on the occasion.

During the academic year the college hosted two two-day workshops on syllabus revision. The first was for BA Sociology, held on 30th and 31st May 2005.The second workshop, which was for BA Psychology, was held on 20th and 21st May 2005. The Board of Studies, University of Kerala, organized both the workshops.

The college conducted two classes on Opportunities for Higher Studies and Jobs for our final year UG classes on 30-06- 05 and 30-08-05. Dr. S.N. Kumar, Dept. of Geology, University College, Thiruvananthapuram and Shri K Raju, Deputy Director, University Employment Information and Guidance bureau, were the resource persons respectively. TIME, Thiruvananthapuram organized a career guidance class for our final year Mathematics, Chemistry, Botany, Zoology, and Commerce students on 20-10-05.

The Department of Psychology organized six seminars, excluding SPECTRUM 2005. The Dept. of Commerce organized a seminar on IT Hardware and Networking

The statistical analysis of the feed back from the final year PG and UG students, which was presented in the staff meeting held on 03-06-05 by the Convener of the Academic Committee, registered an overall excellence. On a prescribed performa all the students of the college evaluated the teachers for the self-assessment of the teachers and improvement by the teachers themselves.

Teachers’ participation from our college in National and International Seminars, workshops, and Refresher Courses was outstanding, this year also. A good number of our teachers presented research papers in several National and International Seminars, spoke in highbrow meetings and published papers and books.

The college conducted Spoken English Classes and Computer Awareness Programmes for final year students as additional input this year. The NSS units of our college conducted a series of Legal Literacy Classes, funded by the PTA. Sri Haridas, a renowned judicial officer, inaugurated the programme on 10-08-05. The Department of Chemistry conducted a quiz competition for our students on 14-06-05

A programme to welcome the first year students was held on 07-10-05. An orientation programme for the first year students, ‘Know Your College’, was conducted on 29- 08- 05. The students were divided into five groups and teams of teachers introduced several aspects of college life including the facilities, disciplinary regulations, curriculum, examination system, syllabus, clubs and other personality development opportunities.

A new method to mark attendance of students was introduced and the academic diary for the year was distributed among the teachers. All the forty one classes separately conducted class-wise PTA this year also and the feed back from parents was collected.

A Mid- term examination for 2nd and 3rd year students was held from 28-11-05 and the Model Examinations for all classes were conducted in the last week of January 2006.

The Career Guidance Cell, which was inaugurated by Sri. G. Chandra Babu, Asst. Secretary of SN Trusts, organized a class on Participating in Group Discussions and Facing Interviews. Dr. Chandra Prasad, professor, IMG, Govt. of Kerala was the resource person. The Cell conducted a mock Group Discussion and Interview Training in association with the Institute of Chartered Financial Management, apart from a special coaching on Resume Writing. The Career Guidance Cell and the Academic Committee jointly organised a Talent Search on 16-02-2006. The famous Cardiologist, Dr. Vijayaraghavan gave away the prizes to the winners on 27-02-06.


The Counselling Centre of the college held two programmes for the students of our neighbouring schools. On 02-01-06 the Centre conducted a programme on Examination Stress Management for 10th std. students of S.N. Higher Secondary School, Chempazhanthy and on 02-02-06 it held an Intelligence Quotient Assessment and Management Programme for the 4th std. students of the Govt. L.P. School, Chempazhanthy.

Onam was celebrated in the college with great pomp this year also. A grand Food Festival, in which students of every department and the non- teaching staff prepared special dishes and set up their own stalls, was the main attraction of the celebrations held on 8-9-05. There was the traditional Onam Feast and inter departmental Athapookkalam competition for students. A Pulkoodu contest was also held in connection with the Christmas celebrations. Deepavali was celebrated with the traditional fireworks

The Founder’s Day, 7th of November, was observed this year by holding a commemorial meeting in which the chief guest was Shri. C.V. Padmarajan, former minister and a political disciple of Shri. R. Sankar, our founder. The birthday of Sree Narayana Guru, the Chathaya Dinam, was celebrated this year by all the staff of our college in the Gurukulam by participating in the Gurupooja.

Samskara, a cultural organization, fully controlled by students, organized an arts festival on 02-12-05. The College Union elections were conducted and new office bearers were elected unanimously. The inauguration of the functioning of the newly elected College Union was held on 16-02-2006 and the chief guest of the day was Sri Prakasan Master M L A. 24th, February 2006 was the College Day and the celebrations were inaugurated by Sri. Venu Nagavally, a renowned Malayalam film actor- director. The farewell meetings for final year degree students of each department were held separately on 10-02-06.

On 01-09-05 a complaint box was installed in front of the General Library. The complaints are checked every day and remedial steps, if necessary, are taken in time. All stakeholders find this facility useful for bringing their grievances to the notice of the college authorities. The Principal opened two coin-box telephone booths in the campus on 09-09-05 and the BSNL broad band Internet connection on 14-12-05.

Billing of the arrears due to the staff has been computerized and in record time the college could prepare and send all the arrear bills to the Deputy Directorate of Collegiate Education, Kollam.

The College Council of the current year was constituted with Shri. I.G. Shibi and Smt. K.S. Lailamma as the staff representatives who were unanimously elected to the Council.

The college constituted a committee under the Right to Information Act 2005 with
Sri. T.N. Manoharan as the Public Information Officer, on 18-01-06. An Ethics Committee was constituted under the convenership of Dr. Mohan Sreekumar, HOD, Physics Dept.

The Film Club of the college conducted a talk by Sri. Shaji N. Karun, an international film personality, on 06-01-06. The activities of the Tourism Club were inaugurated by Sri. B. Jayachandran Nair, Planning Officer, Department of Tourism, Govt. of Kerala.

The Book Club conducted a ‘Face to Face’ programme with Shri. Rajeev Anchal, the famous film director on 18-10-05. The Book Club in a special meeting felicitated Smt. G. Asha, Dept. of Malayalam, who wrote a well-acclaimed book, ‘Anamikayude Suvisesham’.

Dr.C Mohan Sreekumar, HOD of Physics and Shri. T.N. Manoharan, Dept. of Chemistry participated in the post accreditation progarmme on Quality Initiatives in Accredited Institutions, held by NAAC, in Marthoma College, Thiruvalla on 08- 10- 05.

The Parents Teachers’ Association of the college has been very active in providing academic, extra curricular, and infrastructural facilities and amenities to the students and staff. The PTA has taken up a number of activities to ensure the all-round welfare of our students by finding funds for the implementation of schemes, programmes, and facilities. The activities of the PTA have given a remarkable face-lift to the college, altogether.

This year the PTA distributed free mid-day meals on all the working days to 150 poor students and gave free study materials to100 poor students, who were selected by means of the Tutorial machinery. Very poor students received financial assistance from the PTA and all the needy students got medical assistance including timely hospitalization. The PTA extended financial support to PG students to attend National Seminars and gave cash awards to those students, who got the highest marks in the final year degree and post graduate examinations of April/May 2005, in each discipline.

The PTA has taken up the responsibility of paying the security personnel, driver, gardener and sweepers their salary, and paying the telephone and electricity charges for the college, this year also.

The PTA donated a digital camera and a new computer for the Internet service to the college; a cryostat to the Chemistry Dept.; a microscope and a computer printer to the Geology Dept.; running water facility to the Commerce Dept.; a new ladies’ toilet near the Geology Dept.; shelves to various departments, library and the college office; a table and a chair in every class room; all required material for the Tutorial System; and chemicals, books and apparatus for the use of MSc. students.

The financial burden of several academic and other activities were also borne by the PTA. They include the subscription of periodicals in the college library; beautification and furnishing of the Seminar Hall; expenses for the Mid-term and Model Examinations; printing of progress cards; academic diaries and attendance registers; maintenance and modification of toilets; the construction of the college gate; repairing of the water pump set; regular cleaning of the campus, water tank and toilets; modification and beautification of the college garden; electrification of the arts block; repairing and updating of the computers and the UPSs; replacement of unusable lights and fans; maintenance of the Sports Hostel; maintenance of the public addressing system; painting of black boards; and above all, the extension of the water supply and drainage system to the whole of the college building.

SPECTRUM 2005, the functioning of the Career Guidance Cell, loans to the guest lecturers and the non-teaching staff, class-wise PTA meetings, and ‘Know Your College’ programme were fully funded by the PTA.

The expenses for the arrangement of Food Festival, donation to Gurukulam for the Chathaya Dinam celebrations, and the expenses for the construction of the new NSS Bhavan were partially met by the PTA.

The college teams in various disciplines participated in inter-collegiate activities. Our aquatic team won the Kerala University Aquatic championship in men’s section and runner-up in women’s section. We also became winners in the Kerala University Inter Collegiate cycling championship in men’s section section and runner-up in women’s section .The college teams participated in Kerala University intercollegiate volleyball, cricket, ball badminton, kho-kho, gymnastic men and women, hockey men and women. In the Kerala University Athletic Meet our men and women teams scored six points each. Our college hosted the Inter Collegiate Hockey Tournament of Kerala University this year. The kick off was on 14- 10- 05. The Annual Athletic Meet for students and staff was conducted in January 2006.

All the departments conducted study tours and excursions. The staff day for the teachers held on the 18th of March. A merry tour and variety entertainments were the highlights of the celebration.

Apart from the regular medical check up for the students, a health awareness programme and expert talks by Dr. CR Soman and Dr. Krishnakumar for the staff were conducted under the auspices of AKPCTA. Dr Jyothidev Kesavdev gave an excellent lecture on diabetes to create awareness among the members of our staff, the program being organized by AKPCTA.

The management constructed a retaining wall on the side of the playground, and utilizing the audio- visual funds the college installed a dish antenna.

The IQAC inspected all the departments to ensure the quality improvement measures taken by the departments.

The College Union conducted a 2-day Film Festival.

Majority of our teaching and non-teaching staff served as Election Officers for the Local Bodies Elections in the state, held on 24- 09- 05.

The college alumni met on 14-01-05.

Achievements

• This year our college donated the second NSS Bhavan, a residential house built under the auspices of the NSS units of our college, to a homeless poor woman of the locality of the college. The construction work of the house was mainly done by our students themselves with the cooperation of construction experts and aids from several agencies. The teaching staff of the college donated the major portion of the finance for the construction. Shri G Chandra Babu, Assistant Secretary, S N Trusts, handed over the key to the beneficiary on 1st, March, 2006.

Three members of our faculty, Sri. Sony George of Chemistry, Smt. Nishima and Sri Laiju of Psychology, were awarded Ph.D degree during this year. The open defence for the award of Ph D degree in respect of Sri K L Vivekanandan of the Dept of Geology was held on 24-03-06.

Smt.Asha G of the Dept. of Malayalam published a marvelous book, Anamikayde Suviseshamgal. This book has been selected for the prestigious Sahithya Keralam Award for this year’s début writing in Malayalam.

• Sri.I G Shibi of the Dept of Chemisrty presented a research paper in the International Conference on Ground Water at JNU, New Delhi.

• Sri.I G Shibi published five articles in two international and three national journals. Dr. R. Revamma of the Dept of Chemistry and Dr. K. Remanan of the Department of Commerce published two research articles each, in national journals. Dr. Vijayanath Raj of the Dept of Political Science and Dr. M K Manilal of the Department of Commerce also published research articles in national journals. Sri K L Vivekanandan of the Dept of Geology published two research articles in international journals.

• Sri. K. Vijayakumar of the Dept of Chemistry presented a research paper in the annual convention of Indian Chemical Society held at Kolkata.

• Dr. R. Revamma presented a research paper in the National Seminar on Root and Tuber Crops at CTCRI, Thiruvananthapuram.

• Dr. C. Mohan Sreekumar, HOD of Physics, presented a research paper in the Indian Science Congress held at Hyderabad.

• Dr. S. Sreelatha of the Dept of Physics presented two research papers in the National Space Science Symposium held at Vishakhapattanam.

• Dr. K. Remanan presented a research paper in the International Seminar on Business Outsourcing in India held at Kochi.

• Smt. T R Latha of the Dept of English presented a paper in the national seminar on Translation Today: State and Issues at the University of Kerala.

• Dr. B. Jayasree of the Dept of Sociology presented a research paper in the All Kerala Sociological Conference held in Farook College, Kozhikode.

• Sri. P. Sivadasan of the Dept of History presented a paper in the National Seminar held at Govt. College, Chavara.
· Sri A. Shaji of the Dept of History presented a paper in the UGC sponsored Regional Seminar at Kollam.

• Sri. TN Manoharan of the Dept. of Chemistry presented a research paper in the National symposium on Thermal Analysis held at the University of Rajasthan. The paper was adjudged the second best and was awarded with a merit certificate and cash prize.

• Sri. T.N. Manoharan officiated as the Quiz Master in the All Kerala Inter Collegiate Chemistry quiz held at F M N College, Kollam.

• Sri T N Manoharan gave a lecture to the final year BSc Chemistry students of All Saints College, Thiruvananthapuram. Sri IG Shibi and Sri. PK Viswanathan also gave lectures to the staff and PG students of Chemistry at MSM College, Kayamkulam.

• Dr. Vijayanath Raj delivered the keynote address in the Symposium on Human Rights in NSS Women’s College, Karamana, Thiruvananathapuram.

• The UGC has sanctioned two Minor Research Projects in favour of Sri. IG Shibi and Sri PK Viswanathan of the Dept. of Chemistry.

· The Department of Physical Education is pursuing with a minor research project aided by UGC on physical fitness on male adolescents of Kerala with Shri M J Manoj as the principal investigator.

• Our college has been selected for the award of the G V Raja trophy for the best performing college of Kerala University which secured 258 points over all in all the sports and games activities together during the year 2005-06 and consecutively for the second year.

• In the All India Inter-University Aquatic Championship, Shri Athul Krishnaraj S of our college established two new All India Inter-University records in 50m and 100m free style event thus becoming the fastest swimmer of Indian Universities. He was also the member of the gold medal winning team of Kerala University in 4x 100 m free style relay, 4x200 m free style relay and 4x 100 m medley relay.In the VIIIth College games our college Aquatic men team was the winner of men championship and also the runner up in the (women) championship.

• SCERT has selected Sri T N Manoharan and Sri I G Shibi as subject experts for syllabi revision. Dr. M.K. Manilal, Dr. Mohan Sreekumar,Sri Reji K Dhaman, Sri. T.N. Manoharan and Sri. P.K. Viswanathan, members of our faculty, were invited to act as subject experts in the selection and recruitment of teachers by the Vocational Higher Secondary Directorate this year.

• Sri K L Vivekanandan was elected as the Senate member of the University of Kerala.

• The NSS Units of our college won two awards for blood donation, one instituted by the Govt. of Kerala and the other by Termopenpol.

• Sri Krishna Kumar of 3rd year BA Psychology won the best N S S Volunteer Award of the University of Kerala.

• Kum. Swapna and Kum. Sherin George of final year BA English class took part in Aswmedham, a telecast quiz programme, and won Rs. 2000 each.

• Kum. E.K. Lakshmi of 2nd year MSc, chemistry won the first prize in M Sc Project Presentations organized by the Chemical Research Society of India, Trivandrum chapter on 05-08-05. Sri. R. Baiju and Kum. K. Soumya of 2nd year MSc Chemistry won second prize in the Chemistry Quiz conducted by the CRSI, Trivandrum chapter. Sri. R. Baiju, Kum. K. Soumya and Kum. K. Remya of 2nd year MSc Chemistry won the third prize in the All Kerala Inter Collegiate Chemistry Quiz held at Fatima Mata National College, Kollam on 12-01-06.

• Students of our college won first prize in the Athapookkalam competition conducted by Kerala Kaumudi, a leading Malayalam daily.

• Eight students of our college got placement through campus selections held in the college this year. Four of them were selected by the GE, and two each by Ezee Care Solutions and Hindustan Latex Ltd. The SSI placement drive conducted in the college short-listed four of our students for HCL; their placement is expected in May 2006.
